We got used to seeing people with machine guns in Egypt and Sudan. In rural Asia, we’ve gotten used to seeing people, really young children included, with large knifes or machetes; it’s just an everyday work tool. With that said, it’s still a little bit intimidating to be cycling down a quiet road and have a teenager pop out of the woods screaming and running towards you, machete in hand. Of course, when he gets to you he outstretches his hand to give you a high-five and says “Saybaidee” with a huge smile. “Saybaidee…Uhhh…can you put the machete down…please” Phew.
