Saybaidee! No Falang…Mzungu!

KidsWe’ve been cycling in Laos now for a few days along Highway 3. This is gorgeous! Lush green hills, quiet roads; Beautiful and from what we understand the scenery will only get better in the days to come. The best part is the beautiful, smiling, friendly faces we pass each day. As we cycle past tiny, one-street villages, scores of children rush to the side of the road to wave frantically, and scream out “Saybaideeeeeeeeeeee!!!” They start as soon as they see us, and continue well after we’re gone. At times, it’s feels like a contest; who can scream the loudest and for the longest time. Well, how can we resist giving it our best shot as well. “Saybaideeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”.

The adults get into it as well, smiling and waving themselves or waving their baby’s hands saying “something something falang”. We can only guess that means “Wave at the funny looking falang”. :-D Geeze…and all this time we thought we were mzungus. ;-)

Only a few days into it and we’re already really loving this tiny part of the world.
