Through the Eyes of Little Mohammed

TozeurWhile on the road to Gabes, we met Tobias, a motorcyclist from Germany who is riding across Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East. After talking a little bit, he mentioned couch surfing. Basically it’s a community of people who love to travel and welcome fellow travelers into their home. It’s a free couch and an opportunity to meet people with similar interests. In all honesty, we felt a little uncomfortable about it at first, but figured this year off is about being open to new experiences so we decided to give it a try. He gave us the name of the person he stayed with in Tozeur, adding that it was an amazing experience. Stéphane, a very nice guy, agreed to host us right away. In the end, he couldn’t be there but, incredibly, he still invited us to stay with his too roommates. If that weren’t enough, he also asked a friend of his, “Little Mohammed”, to give us a tour of Tozeur.

Had we not met Little Mohammed, we still would have walked around the medina and the oasis. We probably would have found it interesting. We probably wouldn’t have noted the intricacies of the architecture, learnt of the significance of the brick patterns, or learnt about the ancient traditions. We wouldn’t have sat under the palm trees having tea with his old family friend, or sat with his friends at the coffee shop. We got to see Tozeur through the eyes of someone who loves Tozeur. That was really nice. Once again, thank you all very much!
