Medinas, Roman Ruins, Carpets and Tourist Traps

El DjemSince leaving Kairouan, we’ve slowly made our way to Souse, El Djem, Sfax and Gabes. The medinas of Souse and Sfax, though not as spectacular as Kairouan, are very much worth a visit. El Djem is home to a very impressive, and well preserved roman theater though the town itself is nothing more then a serious of coffee shops and souvenir stands. While the sites and towns we visited have been really interesting, we cannot recommend the cycling on the roads linking these towns as they are horrendously busy.

carpetWe are now on the island of Djerba in the town of Houmt Souk. It’s packed with resorts and all the usual trappings that come with swarms of tourists; exorbitant prices, restaurants catering mostly to foreigners and an endless stream of souvenir shops. You can buy anything from beautiful Tunisian carpets and shishas to kitschy trinkets and stuffed camels sporting sunglasses. You can even get a lime green belly dancing outfit if you’re so inclined (I passed, we never go anywhere fancy enough for me to wear it ;-) ). The island is pretty with many attractions to see, but we haven’t found what we were looking for here.
