We woke up the next morning to find very heavy fog had covered the campground and the temperature had dipped to 3 degrees Celsius. While the fog made for great pictures, we were freezing. We put everything we had on, quickly pitched down the tent, got on the bikes and gunned it for Florac. The good news is that it was a 5km downhill to town making for a very fast ride. The bad news is that is was a 5km downhill, making for a very fast ride that felt more like -10C. We sought shelter in a café and kept ordering coffees and pastries until we could feel our fingers again.
When the temperature became more reasonable, we got back on the bikes. The Gorge du Tarn was awaiting us and we were eager to see it. We were right to be excited; this is incredible cycling through a very remote and wild part of France. Limestone cliffs, thick forests, quaint villages, houses built into the rock. Beautiful. The Gorge du Tarn quickly became one of my favorite rides in France. It can easily be done in a day (from Florac to Millau) as its mostly downhill, but this place was so special that we decided to break it up into two.
