After the Dolomites, we thought it would be nice to go to the infamous Italian lakes. It would be a long haul, but we could make it to Lago Di Garda in a day. We knew that hordes of people flock to the lakes each year, particularly in August when nearly all of Italy goes on vacation. A quick look at the map and it’s obvious; almost the entire length of this 60 km long lake is lined with campground after campground after campground. We’re not a huge fans of crowded beaches but the lakes are supposed to be gorgeous, we’re so close and we’re in Italy in peak season…it’s busy everywhere. So, off we went.
True to its reputation, Lago Di Garda is absolutely stunning, a very dramatic landscape. Close your eyes and imagine an enormous, crystal-blue lake outstretched in front of you, tall mountains towering around it. Now imagine an endless sprawl of beach umbrellas, chairs and greased, tanned bodies sizzling in the sun. That’s quite the sight too.
What is it about an endless sprawl of greasy, tanned bodies in Speedos? It hurts the eyes, and yet you still can’t look away.
At any rate, it is undeniably beautiful. If you are looking for crowds and a bustling nightlife, this is a great place. If you’re not, it’s still worth going but it’s best to avoid the peak months of July and August.
