Cycling Namibia

Maria in NamibiaIt feels like we are just whizzing through countries now, spending only a few days in each. Despite that, Namibia was truly memorable. The first few days we cycled mostly on the highway. The scenery was pretty, the cycling was ok. Things took a dramatic turn for the better when we got off the highway and onto the dirt road. Wow! We went from “pretty” to “spectacular”, from “nice” to “jaw-dropping”. Deep canyons, high peaks, stunning colors, tough climbs and sweet downhills. This was glorious cycling! You could not help but be in awe of this vast desolate landscape. We took thousands of pictures and talked endlessly about how fortunate we are to be amongst the few people to experience this land on a bike. As one rider put it, “I died and went to cycling heaven”. If that weren’t enough, we got to have dinner overlooking Fish River Canyon, camp under quiver trees and watch a thunderstorm in the distance light up the sky.

LakeUnfortunately, by taking the highway, we bypassed the sand dunes. It just seems wrong to go to Namibia and not go to Sossusvlei or see the Skeleton Coast. We knew we would want to go back; the last few days of off-road just solidified it.

On a side note, pictures of Namibia have been added to the gallery.
