The TDA 2008 is underway, what an incredible first few days. On January 12, at the foot of the pyramids, we started our 12,000km journey through Africa. What an amazing feeling. I can’t describe it. Imagine cycling with the pyramids behind you, camels on either side of you. Incredible, awesome, exciting and so much more. That moment was about 4 years in the making for us and I’m sure we’ll never forget it.
I don’t want to bore you with play by play details so I figured I would just give you some of the highlights. Day four and so far we have:
- Cycled 537 kms
- Camped in 3 dessert camps, and once on the beach
- Touched the Red Sea
- Scrambled up a mountain (cycling 138km isn’t enough exercise apparently)
- Been chased by dogs (no worries, no one got bitten)
- Gotten lost
- Gotten rescued by Wimpie and Thor in the lunch truck . Hey, what’s an adventure if you don’t get lost or have a few detours along the way.
- Been followed by a car carrying 4 men with rifles. (Turned out to be our police escort, but we weren’t really sure at the time)
- Consumed about a gazillion calories. We really can’t eat enough now. We’ve just stopped chewing and now just inhale our food. Much more efficient that way.
- Met some really interesting people.
In short, we’re pretty happy right now. There is one thing though… We have now spent over 18 hours in the saddle. We’ve cycled 537 kms, leaving 11 463 km to go before we get to Cape Town. Please, please, in the name of all that is good and pure in this world, please send us more bum butt’r. Holy moly are we sore!
Okay, I have to run now. Spiros is pestering all the staff members for calf and butt massages again.
I hope they know he’s kidding.

If there IS a place somewhere along the way that we can send a “care pack” by all means let us know and we would be happy to send some bum butter and other goodies to you!

Ever have one of those moments where when your dreams are actually coming to fruition, where you have to stop and say “Holy crap - I’m actually doing it. And it’s great!” Yeah, even being able to see someone else doing it - pretty awesome!
Congrats on the start!

Wow, just wow. As Malcolm said, just to be able to read about you doing this is amazing… And to think you sat in the next cube to me at work for all those years, and NEVER let on!
